Remove a password from a PDF

Have a PDF that asks for a password every time you open it — a bank statement, payslip, invoice or e-ticket? If you know the password, choose the file here, enter the password once, and download a copy that opens without it. Free, with no account or sign-up.

Try the Remover

Select a PDF and enter its password. We’ll remove protection if you own the file or have rights to edit it.

  • The PDF is unlocked in your browser on this device. Your file and its password are not uploaded to our servers.
  • The first unlock downloads a small PDF engine (about 450 KB). This can take a moment on slow connections.

How to unlock a PDF

  1. Choose the PDF that is password-protected.
  2. Enter its current password — the one you normally type to open the file.
  3. Select “Remove Password”. Your browser opens the file with your password and creates an unprotected copy — on your device, without uploading it.
  4. Download the unlocked PDF. It opens in any PDF reader without asking for a password.

What this tool does

  • Removes the open (user) password from a PDF when you supply the correct password.
  • Returns a normal PDF you can open, share or archive without retyping the password.
  • Works in any modern browser, on desktop and mobile.

What it does not do

  • It does not guess, crack or recover forgotten passwords — you must know the password.
  • It only accepts PDF files, one file per request.
  • Use it only on documents you own or are authorised to modify.

What happens to your file

The PDF is unlocked in your browser using a PDF engine (qpdf compiled to WebAssembly) that runs on your device. Your file, its filename and its password are not uploaded to our servers.

Frequently asked questions

I forgot the password. Can this remove it?

No. The tool needs the correct current password to open the file. Contact whoever sent you the document to get the password.

It says “Incorrect password”.

Passwords are case-sensitive. Many banks and employers use a pattern such as part of your name plus your date of birth — check the email or letter that came with the file.

Why does the first unlock take a moment?

The first time, your browser downloads the PDF engine (about 450 KB). After that, unlocking runs entirely on your device.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the unlocked file.
